Palos Verdes Art Center: Skin in the Game

Ongoing

The Palos Verdes Art Center presents the virtual exhibition Skin in the Game on display beginning September 12.

To have “skin in the game” is to have a personal stake in a competitive endeavor, placing assets at risk, win or lose. For Black folk in this game we call America, the asset risked is the body itself ¬ its physical being and cultural identity.

Curated by Brent Holmes, Skin in the Game presents works by twelve artists working during this time of unrest that challenge mainstream assumptions of Black identity and artistic practice.

Their pieces range from experiments in Afrofuturism and Afropunk to street portraiture, abstraction, exercises in queer humor, and the appropriation of minstrelsy. Media includes video and animation, performance video, VR (virtual reality), painting, photography, and sculpture.

The artists featured are Crackhead Barney, Q’shaundra James, Cat Jones, Karla Lagunas, Antwane Lee, AJ McClenon, Mark Steven Greenfield, Carlos Ramirez, Se7en Captures, Lance L. Smith, and duo Jason Woodberry and Marcus Kiser.

TAM Fall Exhibitions

Ongoing

Torrance Art Museum (TAM) presents the Fall Exhibitions on display beginning September 19.

Tam is pleased to announce two new exhibitions for fall: Baker’s Dozen 2020 in the Main Gallery and Rewilding Structures in Gallery Two.

Main GalleryBaker’s Dozen 2020 acts as a review of sorts; a survey show of thirteen artists whose work made an impression upon the curators in the last year. These thirteen reflect current directions in Southern Californian contemporary art practices.

Historically, a Baker’s Dozen is thirteen instead of twelve, as British bakers in the 13th century gave customers an extra loaf of bread to avoid being punished by King Henry III for cheating the public when serving up notoriously light loaves. It takes on new meaning during 2020, considering all the necessary pandemic closures that robbed public of experiences. As with previous Baker’s Dozens, the selections within this exhibition reflect our own preconceptions and biases, centering on artistic endeavors at this moment in history. 2020 has proven to be a year of daunting challenges, and it is insightful to discover how new creations can either follow, oppose and/or move beyond the influences of our particular times.

ESMoA Experience #47: FREESTATE

Ongoing

The El Segundo Museum of Art presents Experience #47: FREESTATE on exhibit both inside and outside the museum from October 8 through March 27, 2021.

Taking ESMoA and LA’s South Bay City of El Segundo as ostensible “campaign headquarters,” FREESTATE will feature new artworks that artist Cole Sternberg conceives as fabricated historical ephemeras and objects, sovereign documents, and fictional propaganda. The gallery space will be split into three rooms, forcing the viewer to experience each as a separate moment along the path to the Free Republic.

FREESTATE prolifically details and addresses concepts of human rights, the environment, democracy and freedom through a multi-media and publicly activated artistic journey, one that recalls Joseph Beuys’ 7000 Oaks (which precipitated the founding of Germany’s Green Party in 1980).
