March 15, 2020
For the last ten years, South Bay by Jackie.com has kept the community informed of all the incredible leisure activities and special events taking place in our seaside bubble.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we’re temporarily switching gears to act as a clearing house for hyper-local news. We’re receiving COVID-19 updates and information from multiple, reliable sources. In order to distribute all of this information in a timely manner, we’re posting announcements to the Daily Blog page as we receive them.
Almost every South Bay event has been cancelled, postponed or reconfigured as a virtual event. We’re posting virtual and live stream events to the Special Events page. You can bet that when events begin to come back online (hopefully by the summer!) you’ll hear about it here first!
We’re all in this together and we’ll get through this together. #SouthBayStrong

ESMoA Experience #39: EAT
February 28 – May 18, 2019
The El Segundo Museum of Art presents Experience #39: EAT February 28 through May 18.
Curated by Dr. Bernhard Zuenkeler with curatorial assistance by Holly M. Crawford, EAT is a group show examining the creative power of food and eating across place and time. Over the centuries eating has been a tremendous accelerator of driving imagination and cooperation. Our bodies turn food into energy so that we may survive, thrive, and create.
One of the fundamental actions of our lives. We sleep. We breathe. We eat. We love. Without eating nothing moves. But do we pay enough attention about what we eat, how we eat and when we eat? Do we care about preparation of our food, our celebration of eating together? Over the centuries, eating has been a tremendous accelerator of driving imagination and cooperation. Eating has been a driving force for the arts and vice versa. Cooking is certainly a form of art. The preservation of food, the development of new forms of food is a creative task.
Driftwood Wine Bar & Kitchen
767 Deep Valley Drive
Rolling Hills Estates, CA 90274
(310) 265-4055
https://driftwoodonthehill.com/
Cuisine: Coastal Influenced Farm-to-Table
Jackie says: Driftwood is located in the former Corazon space on the hill. It’s open for dinner starting at 5 p.m., closed on Mondays, and serves brunch on Sundays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The decor is coastal casual with, you guessed it, plenty of driftwood accents. The layout is a series of small spaces, giving it an intimate feel. The menu offers Small Plates, Bigger Plates, Soup/Salad and Sweet Endings and details the ingredients for each dish. The menu covers all the bases with seafood, chicken, beef and vegan/vegetarian options. I’m a fan of small plates and they offer a nice variety. Don’t miss the Fried Green Tomato Sliders! I’d say they were my favorite thing on the menu but there are still several items I have yet to try. The wine list is well rounded, and based on the number I watched being poured at the bar, the wine flights are super popular. Prior restaurants haven’t had much luck at this location (which is weird because it’s a very walkable neighborhood), so I’m keeping my fingers crossed that Driftwood develops a loyal clientele.

Also included are metal castings of toy guns, and sculptures made of found objects, such as shooting trophies coupled to antique school bells. Focusing on the traditions of Americana, the exhibit also includes a carnival shooting booth with a twist – instead of tin ducks, fleeing school children mixed with so-called “active shooters” are the targets. HOPE explores the reciprocal influence of western and latin American video and new media art in Cuba. No other country has been so equally torn between love and hate, desire and neglect, isolation and reception, western and eastern ideologies. Indeed, the Caribbean island nation is so full of contradiction that it is no wonder it became a hotbed for contemporary and new media art. The richness and sheer number of Cuba’s facets grew from postmodern, neo-baroque, conceptual and minimalistic roots – to name just a few western influences.
Experience #31: HOPE, will run through January 28, 2018.

September 15 – October 1, 2017
Palos Verdes Performing Arts presents the multiple Tony Award-winning musical comedy The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee from September 15 through October 1 at the Norris Theatre.
The show instantly spells F-U-N as a quirky group of adolescent overachievers (played by adult actors) go head to head with each other in a spelling bee championship, while coping with overzealous parents, teen crushes, sabotage attempts, and the trials and tribulations of puberty. The hysterically funny tale will have you rooting for the unlikeliest of heroes – the awkward, but charmingly loveable cast of outsiders for whom a spelling bee is the one place where they can stand out and fit in at the same time.

Great Maple

Cuisine: Eclectic, New Brigade Style Cooking
Jackie says: This restaurant creates a bit of confusion on the first visit. The name sounds vaguely Canadian; the exterior looks like a Chinese restaurant; the interior has a French feel; and they seem to be obsessed with English pop-overs. The menu reflects this international melange with a wide variety of dishes. On the website, they refer to it as a “Modern cross between a European brasserie and classic diner” – the preferred term, European Dinette. Never mind all that. The space is large, open, light and airy and the food is spectacular. They serve breakfast, lunch, dinner and everything in between – the menus are extensive. In addition, they also offer Roaming Tapas Boards with mini seasonal plates and cocktails that periodically take flight in the dining room. The dishes are so varied, I can’t do it justice here, so be sure to visit the website. Eating at Great Maple is a dining adventure!

Cuisine: Seafood
Jackie says: I’d been hearing really good things about this restaurant and recently stopped in for a bite with my co-host Joe Terry. We ordered several dishes and shared everything. The first thing you should know about the Fish Shop – EVERYTHING IS FRESHLY PREPARED DAILY IN HOUSE….and I mean EVERYTHING: the salsas, dressings, tartar sauce, coleslaw, macaroni salad, fries, EVERYTHING. We started with chips and salsa and the salsa verde knocked my socks off…it was incredibly fresh and tasty. The clam chowder was so creamy and delicious, Joe ordered a bowl to go for his wife. We asked for recommendations and ordered the Fish House Shrimp and a crab cake before moving on to a halibut sandwich and signature TKO Taco. Each dish was flavorful and FRESH. Diners have the option to design their own meal: choose a fish, pick a marinade, decide if you want it grilled or fried and then choose between having it served as a taco, salad, sandwich or plated entree. The possibilities are endless! The space is casual and airy. Place your order at the counter and grab a table on the sunny patio overlooking Pier Avenue. One last thing – NO CORKAGE FEE, EVER!!!
